Re: why anime fan?
it depends wat kind of anime u r watching...
some are well done in terms of their rendering and intricate stories while others outright suck!
i guess it depends on the age group they target...
it's a bit like Hollywood movies...some are blockbusters while others are pretty much shit!
anime elements ->
- rendering: definitely out of this world though some cheap ones can be real pain to watch!
- plot: depending upon the anime, it's usually loaded with historical /literary references...e.g. quotes or names of characters/places
- characters: they are always funny or have some elements of "buffoonery"
- dream: you won't like anime if you are not into the visuals n if you don't usually allow yourself to dream of the impossible!
- logic: usually, the episodes won't be stand alone. they all lead to the something and most, if not all, end with cliffhangers...
- manga -> anime: most anime are based on manga whose success amongst the targeted audience has already been proven on the market. so by the time it is made into an anime, there's already a huge fanbase! the reverse, as well, holds true!
recommend ->
naruto, naruto shippudden, bleach, death note, avatar: the last air bender (not an anime per se), devil may cry, ergo proxy, blood+, full metal alchemist, .hack//roots, .hack//signs, noir, neon genesis evangelion, lain, vision of escaflowne
If u can't stomach watching a whole anime series, just get hold of one of them OVAs...They are as good if not better as them anime.

For darker than black, had already downloaded half of the series before it was licensed and got the rest via torrents :-) As for Mai-Hime, it's just too good One of the first I watched actually.

Here is a great post I found on the educational value of anime but which was not continued.

Anime: esoteric or entertainment?
There has been contentious debate over the educational value of anime
in my school and home, and I have been challenged by a teacher to prove
it's worth as a genre to be acknowledged as having any educational
value, whatever it teaches us. Are we simply wasting time on our Anime
marathons, watching for 5 hours (sometimes more) or actually gaining
insight into a culture, and society?
Take, for example Naruto.
The themes of loyalty, friendship and good verus evil are all well and
good, very generic and universal, but what makes it such an interesting
text to deconstruct is it's general appeal, not just to a young
audience, but to that of any age. There is a general misconception in
western literature and pop culture that cartoons are merely for
children, but that is not exactly true, even in western cultures.
Family Guy and the Simpsons just to name two deal with mature themes,
often satirising the absurity and stupidity of our lives. Homer is the
ultimate symbol of overweight America, and we see that the anitcs of
the family often poke fun at celebrities, such as the 'Mel Gibson'
episode, and make various references to pop culture as well.
So,
how can Anime draw parallels to western cartoons? It is challenging,
granted, but we have to understand that todays pop culture and 'low
entertainment' could most definately become the next canon. The anime
art form is already a well established art form, but again, critics
such as my creative arts co-ordinator find it too simple and generic,
hard to tell individually charecters because they are all charecterised
by the same features, big eyes, small noses and little detail, compared
to the western works which emphasise attention to detail and anatomical
correctedness. Perhaps the fact that quality Manga and Anime can be
created week after week can actually compete with the high quality
graphic novels that sit side by side on my bookshelf.
So
please, add to this. Does anime or manga have any educational value
whatsoever? A bunch of mindless comics and cartoons simply for a few
minuites of escapism, or actually worthy to deconstruct and examine?

I never said I believed in alchemy
As for Detective Conans and GTO, fini gueter depi lonten sa
People don't watch anime to learn japanese. By watching anime, they manage to retain some jap words. A japanese class would be better than any other anime.
Ek mone trouve post la bien interessant =P
Re: why anime fan?
Why? huh - because anime is funny, wacko, has awesome special FX (most of which are in 2D instead of being the 3D crap), and fantasy and scifi rule in anime! Girls are cute. Guys are strong. There is a lot of character development without sacrificing the main storylines. The language (Japanese mostly) rocks! The music - esp. Japanese pop is totally wonderful to the ears.
My Favs: Full Metal Alchemist (loved the series but disliked the movie - Conqueror of Shambala), Midori No Hibi, Ouran Host Club, huh.. Hack/.Roots (I watched only 2 eps ), DBZ (but i think it's manga), Grand Teacher Onisuka (awesome! it's seji kun from Midori but in an adult way LOL and in a different theme), huh, that's about it.
Anybody watched the above mentioned? Any fans?
I wish I had more free time to dedicate to anime. I'm awaiting a non-anime series to air - Futurama.
Anime are good. It's better to watch anime than to watch SpongeBob and claim it's funny and insightful. (No offense to spongebob fans)

Re: why anime fan?
Futurama, the futurama? with Bender and all? was one of my fave series along with Daria, Simpsons etc... I'm not much into anime... Am more into sitcoms... yup am an alien here
Re: why anime fan?
Ha. Here's another alien. I love futurama. I'm awaiting for the DVD of "Bender's score" via post (damn DHL). There will be 2 other movies and then the new seasons will kick in. My fav. character: Bender, of course.
I'm still waiting for Fry and Leela to finally get together. I wonder if Nibbler will move in with them if they get married.
Daria rocked. I had a major crush on Queen. LOL
Simpsons are ok but it's kinda boring now esp. due to new interesting stories of Family Guy. But those 2 series are of a different genre.
Who is your fav. Futurama character, BTW? Are you into Sci-Fi as wel?

Re: why anime fan?
loved bender and leela! they rocked!
hehe, i was more like queen some years ago, but i always wanted to be daria! she's awesome...
am not much into sci-fi, except for the big stuff like star trek, star gate. I liked superman(lois and clark) but I was a kid then, and others like Alf etc used to fascinate me!

Re: why anime fan?
Awesome! I'm a gater (fan of SG1 and Atlantis). There are 2 new movies (SG1) coming out in March and later this year. The new season of Atlantis rocks. If you want to discuss about Stargate, I'm all in.
There's a new Trek movie also coming out. W007...strike that..it's W008 (we are in 2008 lol). Apparently, it will involve time travel and 4 different Kirks.
Alf was so funny esp. when he spied on neighbours.
Lois and Clark - awesome! He was too skinny though. The whole wedding and "frog" clone storyline was confusing IMHO.
Don't you think gatecon and other conventions could be organised in Mauritius? Reunion had 2 gatecons already and Mauritius features 0 series convention. What about anime conventions?
Hey, just day dream of having people dressed up as Bender and making their small kids dressed up as Nibbler, for a Futurama convention in Mauritius! LOL Bring on the beer.
Check this out: http://www.asciimation.co.nz/bender
Don't you want one?
