1878 – Thomas Alva Edison patents his latest invention, the phonograph.
1958 – Gibson’s first Flying V guitars are shipped from the factory.
Rockabilly star Carl Perkins leaves Sun to sign with Columbia.
1959 – Ray Charles records “What’d I Say.”
1961 – The Beatles play Liverpool’s Cavern Club for the first time.
1964 – Simon and Garfunkel record “The Sounds of Silence.” The
Rolling Stones release a cover of Buddy Holly’s “Not Fade Away” that
becomes their first U.K. Top Ten. The Beatles meet Cassius Clay
(Muhammad Ali) in Miami, where he’s training for a title bout against
Sonny Liston, and they’re in town to perform on The Ed Sullivan Show.
1966 – In early studio dates for Pet Sounds, 23-year-old
Brian Wilson produces the first backing tracks for what—four studios,
six months, and 17 sessions later—will eventually become “Good
Vibrations.”
1968 – David Gilmour replaces guitarist/founding member Syd Barrett
in Pink Floyd. Genesis release “The Silent Sun,” their debut single.
1969 – Johnny Cash and Bob Dylan record a full session
together in Nashville; only “Girl from the North Country” is officially
released. Bee Gee Maurice Gibb marries pop star Lulu at St. James’
Church in Buckinghamshire, England.
1977 – Stevie Wonder wins his third Album of the Year Grammy in four years for Songs in the Key of Life,
while Song of the Year honors go to “I Write the Songs” by Barry
Manilow, even though he didn’t—the song was actually penned by Beach
Boy Bruce Johnston.
1979 – The Clash launch their first American tour at New York City’s Palladium.
1981 – Five years after George Harrison is found guilty of having
“subconsciously” interpolated the melody of the Chiffons’ “He’s So
Fine” into his first solo hit “My Sweet Lord,” a New York judge orders
the ex-Beatle to pay $587,000 in damages to ABKCO Music, the company
owned by accountant/former Beatles manager Allen Klein.
1991 – Public Enemy boycott the Grammy Awards to protest that
presentation of the rap awards will not be part of the ceremony’s TV
broadcast.
1995 – Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band play “Murder
Incorporated” at a New York City club, the first time the legendary
ensemble has performed together in seven years. Wearing a bridal white
bikini, Baywatch star Pamela Anderson marries Mötley Crüe drummer Tommy Lee on the beach in Cancun, Mexico.
1998 – The Cure’s Robert Smith and Barbra Streisand do battle on South Park in animated form.
2001 – Johnny Cash is released from Nashville’s Baptist Hospital,
where he’s been hospitalized with pneumonia for over a week. The same
night, Cash wins the Grammy for Best Male Vocal Country Performance,
his tenth trophy from the National Academy of Recording Arts and
Sciences.
