Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
Have you ever been tempted to copy someone else's work?
I know most of you will reply negative to this. But sometimes this might occur and it is important that you know that plagiarism is a severe offense in blogging.
It is important that you state your sources, whether it is for a piece of information or for a photograph posted on your blog.
So, what's your opinion on plagiarism?

Re: Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
Plagiarism is something that Mauritians are very apt at... (just like piracy...)
& it's difficult to change the mentality - but Mauritian bloggers should do their best at keeping their content original & where copied, mention the source.

Re: Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
i do paste/post some lyrics too, but everyone knows it's not from me, since I state the band/singer's name etc. it's not plagiarism as long as the source is clealy stated.
Plagiarism is a very severe act, I even consider it as a crime. That is why I've got the copyscape badge on my blog. c pa ki mo ecrir bne chef d'oeuvres lor mo blog mai i still value my words!

Correct me if I am wrong but I think that some of your posts lack the link to their original source CarrotMadman. You should make them more visible.

LOL... u see i'm a plagiarist...
Yeah, it's true my first posts were total plagiarism... but that was long time ago when i was making my steps into the blogging world.
Now, with all my posts i include all sources & links.
Anyway, i'll try to include all sources with those "unsourced posts"... Inform me if u see any "plagiarized" posts i missed...

Re: Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
Jevin this is exactly what we meant. Some of our friends who know we are doing the reviews at MBB have mentioned those links and posts as well. They have advised us to look through this and point it out.

Ok, i forgot to put the source... I shouldn't make those mistakes anymore now - BigB is watching me (anyway, it was quite obvious that it was from BBC Sports - all my sports posts are from BBC Sports!) Thanks for the links - added them now!
The real thing i want to point is this - is copying "news-related" stuff called PLAGIARISM!?!?!!?! What's the purpose of a news report if it can't be shared!?!?!
Btw, i did add my own very small bits, & i had to search all those photos (& it took quite a lot of time & breaking copyright infringements along, since i had no permission to reproduce those hard-to-find images!)
I personally think those BBC reports don't contain enough pictures... so that's why i post with loads of pictures to show the action & how it really happened. Thanks for comparing those two links - now u folks can see the difference between the picture-less version & the one with photos!!!!
I think we have a great divergence over the definition of plagiarism - "Take the work or idea of someone else and pass it off as one's own." What i'm talking about is stuff like essays, poems, patents, reports, ideas, suggestions &... personal blog posts.
BUT NOT NEWS!!! News is meant to be shared! Otherwise we'll remain ignorant as cavemen...
If people could be sued for "news" plagiarism, then L'Express shoudn't copy those Reuters news & Le Matinal with those USA Today, India Times, blablabla...
The "posted by carrotmadman6"... that's permanent. I can't do anything with that coz it's in the template. Did u take it literally?? hahaa!
Thanks for the support.thembb wrote:Jevin this is exactly what we meant. Some of our friends who know we are doing the reviews at MBB have mentioned those links and posts as well. They have advised us to look through this and point it out.
Re: Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
Copying anything word for word from a site is a copyright infringement. News from BBC is their property, you can quote, or copy but you should mention it was taken from BBC.
If you report the news as you have read on BBC but by using your own words, then it is allowed.
Moreover, I believe you are using adsense, you should read their program policies.
Jevin has pointed out something important here. what you are doing is plagiarism. You cannot run a blog by posting works of other press and news agencies and not mentioning the source. As for the photographs, you must mention the source as well.
What you can do from now on if you want to post like you have been doing so far, is mention the source for the news and photographs so that people will know it does not come from you.
When the reviewers at MBB looked through your blog, all they saw was professionalism. Little did they know about this. They saw no links to sources, nothing stating that this is not your own words.

That's what i've been doing - putting these posts & then commenting on it...except for these recent post where i forgot to put the source. But the problem is with my Blogger Template... whenever I quote anything, everything gets messed up. I've tried to put it in italics - but again some letters at the end of each line doesn't show up.

As long i'm not doing it to target specific Adsense keywords, it's OK.
I've always been trying to mention all my sources. If you think i'm doing plagiarism here, so be it.
As for the photographs, it's a bit difficult to mention ALL those sources - so i won't mention them.
Sorry for disappointing MBB reviewers - u can delete my review if you want. I don't care.

LOL
For one: I meant reports like the IPCC's report on Global Warming, market share reports by financial companies, etc. Reports that are copy-righted & not meant to be shared.
For two: YES, I sincerely believed NEWS is meant to be shared - even if I know i'm reaching a single person(i.e me), then it's OK with me.
For three: Yeah, i know l'Express does have contacts with Reuters... but as for Matinal, i'm a bit doubtful.
Unfortunately they don't quote their sources each time - that's something i've seen very often.

Re: Plagiarism in blogging - Have you ever been tempted?
Carrotmadman, all this was not aimed at you personally. And I would really appreciate it if you did not ask other members to go elsewhere if they have got "probs".
As you can see here, Jevin's points are quite valid and he stated this in your own good. Perhaps we could end this discussion here, unless anyone want to have their say about plagiarism.
This discussion would be here in case anyone want to clear their doubts regarding plagiarism and implications of this to Google Adsense.

I don't think Adsense have any problems with posting plagiarized material, although it's explicitly stated in their TOS.(Blogger also i think) I've never seen anyone being banned from Adsense for anything apart from click-fraud.
As long as BBC.co.uk don't sue me, i'm ok with it. (probability < 0)
